If you are currently searching for a job you may be able to deduct related expenses on your tax return. Following are some tips to help make the most of your deduction.

Qualifications

  • Expenses must be in your current occupation – this deduction is not available to those who want to switch careers
  • There was not a substantial break between your job search and your last job
  • You are not looking for a job for the first time
  •  You can claim the amount that is more than 2% of your AGI

  • Agency fees
  • Expenses for preparing, copying and mailing your resume
  • Travel expenses during the job search, such as mileage
